CBMM - Community Day

As a way of saying thank you to the regional community, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, MD, invites the public to its second free Community Day 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 21 at the CBMM’s Fogg’s Landing. The day kicks off at 9 a.m. with the Bay Hundred Covenant Churches’ tent service. Highlights include a dockside visit from the schooner Sultana; live music by local band, Blind Wind; a radio-controlled skipjack regatta (11 a.m. to noon); an opportunity for guests try their hand at operating the radio-controlled boats; a presentation of Delmarva Tales, Legends & Ghost Stories by Maryland author and storyteller, Ed Okonowicz (noon); Blue Sky Puppet Theatre performance (1 p.m.); the Phillips Wharf Environmental Center’s Fishmobile; a children’s footrace; climbing to the top of the 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse; talks with shipwrights and apprentices engaged in wooden boatbuilding and restoration in the boatyard; exploration of all of CBMM’s 12 exhibition buildings and historic structures; free river cruises aboard a number of CBMM’s historic vessels, including the 1920 buyboat Winnie Estelle; and rowing or sailing aboard one of CBMM’s small craft. All boat rides are offered free of charge for this event. Guests can also watch the log-hull restoration of the 1889 bugeye Edna E. Lockwood, under way in the boatyard through 2018. Other exhibitions include Potomac Waterfowling: Gunning the Nation’s Rivers, and Robert de Gast’s Chesapeake, featuring 80 photographs curated from the more than 10,000 by de Gast in CBMM’s collection.
