Experts explore what ails Bay restoration on public television Tuesday

  • April 20, 2015

Maryland Public Television is presenting a special program Tuesday, “Chesapeake Bay Summit: Charting a Course,” that will explore vexing issues facing the estuary with experts from around the region.

The hour-long discussion airs live at 8 p.m. It is moderated by former CNN Anchor Frank Sesno and will explore questions about whether the Bay is actually getting better, whether greater regulation and enforcement is needed, or whether more fundamental changes in public policy and citizens’ lifestyles will be required if Bay goals are to be met.

In addition to discussing the important issues surrounding Bay cleanup, panelists will also create a list of the major impediments to Bay restoration over the years, as well as policy and practice alternatives that could help move cleanup forward.

Over the next 18 months, Maryland Public Television and The Bay Journal will use the list as a framework for a series of special reports on the success, or lack of it, in meeting Chesapeake Bay cleanup goals.

Panelists on the program include:

• Dr. Donald Boesch, President of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science;
• Tim Wheeler, Environmental Reporter, The Baltimore Sun;
• Kim Coble, Vice President, Environmental Protection & Restoration, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation;
• Lynne Hoot, Executive Director, Maryland Grain Producers Utilization Board;
• Rena Steinzor, President, Center for Progressive Reform;
• Joel Dunn, Executive Director, The Chesapeake Conservancy;
• Adam Ortiz, Director, Department of the Environment, Prince George's County, Md.

Besides being carried on Maryland Public Television, the program will appear on public broadcasting stations in Harrisburg and Norfolk, and the broadcast will be carried on WYPR-FM in Baltimore.

The summit is a highlight of MPT’s annual Bay Week programming . For more information about the summit, click here.
