The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is looking for ambassadors eager to embark on a voyage of discovery while spreading the message of stewardship along the Susquehanna, Potomac and James rivers, as well as a one-day trip on the Patuxent.

Participants on this year’s sojourns will help to strengthen public awareness, understanding and appreciation of these rivers while taking part in restoration projects, meeting with local dignitaries, enjoying campfire programs and, of course, enjoying some of the finest paddles in the watershed.

New to the sojourns this year is an optional Sojourn Canoe-a-thon, where participants seek sponsors who may pay either a lump sum or set amount per mile. The money raised will be used to support the conservation and restoration programs of the Alliance. Those who take part in this voluntary fund-raiser will be recognized during each Sojourn and in a special feature in the Alliance’s Watershed Watch newsletter. For information about the canoe-a-thon, or to pick up a sponsors form, call the Alliance at 410-377-6270.

The sojourns are open to paddlers of all abilities, and families are encouraged to take part. Participants may paddle the entire route or for any number of days. The registration fee includes camping, three meals a day, shuttles, activities, programs, safety services, T-shirt, boat decal and commemorative booklet. Paddler refresher sessions will be provided the first day of each Sojourn.

The 2004 Sojourn schedule is:

  • 14th Annual Susquehanna Sojourn: June 23–30. This 91-mile route will journey from Sayre, PA to Pittston/West Pittston, PA. Participants will help to plant a rain garden and remove invasive plants as well as dance, meditate and many other recreational activities.
  • Third Annual James River Sojourn: June 25–27. A festive cookout with music and a Native American drumming circle will kick off this paddle from Howardsville, VA to Bremo Bluff, VA.
  • Third Annual Potomac River Sojourn: July 9–17. The Alliance and the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin are coordinating this paddle, which begins in Cumberland, MD and ends in Williamsport, MD. Activities include Cumberland’s Canalfest, paddling Paw Paw bends, hiking through Paw Paw tunnel, touring historic Fort Frederick and more.
  • Patuxent River: June 13. This one-day trip on the Patuxent will coincide with the annual Bernie Fowler Wade-in.
