Shortly after 1 p.m. June 24, the red "On Air" light flashed on in the WYPR studio and our latest media endeavor became a reality.
"Midday on the Bay" debuted on the Midday with Dan Rodricks show, a partnership between Maryland's largest public radio station and the Bay Journal. The monthly show will expand on topics that have recently been featured in the Bay Journal.
Rona Kobell, who took the lead in helping to create the show, handled the on-air duties for the debut, which highlighted "Treasured Landscapes and Endangered Places."
The discussion started with Rona explaining the controversy over a proposed new road in the Mattawoman watershed, which she reported on in the June issue, (See "Paradise Lost? Proposed Road Threatens Mattawoman Creek.") Environmental groups fear the increased impervious cover associated with the road and new development will doom one of the state's most pristine rivers.
Then, David O'Neill, president of the new Chesapeake Conservancy, joined the show for a broader discussion about the Treasured Landscape Initiative. The initiative seeks to bring together diverse partnerships to preserve large landscapes of natural, historical and cultural significance before they are lost. (See "Treasured Perspectives spur drive to save landscapes on a large scale," April 2010.)
While I wasn't on the air -some of us feel a lot more comfortable writing complete sentences than speaking them-I did promise to do so in the future.
We hope the new partnership will bring Bay news to more people than ever before, and help introduce the Bay Journal to a new audience.
The show is scheduled to broadcast at 1 p.m. the third Thursday of each month. The inaugural show can be heard on the Dan Rodricks page of the WYPR website, www.wypr.org/midday.html. Stay tuned for the July 29 show. (Yes, it is running a week later in July.) In the future, you can look at the Bay Journal or Midday websites to see when the show is on and what will be discussed. There are also plans to add links to the show on our website.
The blog is coming
Although the July-August issue signals that it's time for our summer break, we aren't going away. In mid-July, we will be launching the new Bay Journal blog website, which will feature frequent updates on news and other details.
For the first time, we'll be regularly providing new information between the times when our regular issue goes online. Besides updates to stories, we will be providing more up-to-date news, as well as deal with national issues that have some bearing on the Bay. It'll also offer readers a chance to post their comments.

Bay Journal Fund now takes credit cards
In response to numerous requests from people, the Bay Journal Fund is now able to accept credit card donations on our web-site through Google's checkout service, which handles donations for nonprofit organizations.
Act now to confirm your subscription
Finally, I'd like to thank the thousands of readers who have confirmed their Bay Journal subscriptions so far. Unfortunately, the first several weeks of the effort were marked by numerous problems with the toll-free number. Although the majority of calls appear to have gone through, a number of people reported problems having their customer ID code accepted.
Our service provider has worked to address this issue. Because of the issue, we have extended the deadline, but ACT NOW to ensure you don't miss an issue.
All readers who received the Bay Journal prior to the June issue need to confirm their subscription using the five-digit code above their name on the address label. Either call toll-free 1-877-405-6127 and enter the code when prompted, or visit the resubscription page, click on "confirm your subscription" and enter the code.
