Grants available for stewardship or farm conservation projects in region

By Karl Blankenship

Two programs are offering grants to support restoration projects in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is soliciting proposals for the Chesapeake Bay Small Watersheds Grant Program.

The program provides grants of up to $200,000 to organizations and local governments working on a local level to protect and improve watershed health in the Chesapeake basin while building citizen-based resource stewardship.

It is managed in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Program with funding from the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Forest Service and other partners.

Interested applicants are encouraged to participate in a webcast workshop on Jan. 23. To register for the webcast, and to download the Request for Proposals and Application, visit www.nfwf.org/chesapeake.

Proposals are due Feb. 29, 2008. For additional details, contact Amanda Bassow at mailto:amanda.bassow@nfwf.org.org or Brian Kittler at 202-857-0166 or brian.kittler@nfwf.org.

In addition, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service, will provide grants to support innovative conservation practices on farms in the Bay region under its Chesapeake Bay Stewardship Fund, in which the NFWF pools federal dollars from the EPA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Forest Service, and now NRCS, to make strategic investments in the Chesapeake Bay's restoration.

Grants of up to $1 million each will be awarded to organizations working directly with farmers to improve water quality and restore habitats.

For details, contact Amanda Bassow at 202-857-0166 or amanda.bassow@nfwf.org.
